Orthophosphates are also known as reactive phosphates. Orthophosphate directly contributes to the eutrophication of a body of water. Eutrophication is the enrichment of nutrients for Algae growth in water.
Orthophosphate is found naturally in the environment and in water. Orthophosphate is also artificially added to fertilizers. Between the wind and rain the natural Orthophosphate and the Orthophosphate in the fertilizer often finds its way into swimming pools. In swimming pools, orthophosphate is the most prevalent of all types of phosphates. When people in the water treatment business talk about "phosphates", they are usually referring to orthophosphate.
